The Route

Everest Base Camp trekking route map

The trek begins with the journey into the Everest region and follows the Dudh Koshi Valley through Phakding and Namche Bazaar. Namche is the main trading center of the Khumbu and an important acclimatization stop before the trail continues higher.

From Namche, the route continues through Tengboche, home to one of the best-known monasteries in the region, and then climbs toward Pheriche and Lobuche as the landscape becomes increasingly alpine.

The upper trail follows the Khumbu Glacier toward Gorak Shep and Everest Base Camp. From Base Camp, trekkers return to Gorak Shep before making the early ascent of Kala Patthar, one of the best viewpoints for seeing Mount Everest itself.

The return journey descends through Dingboche, Namche Bazaar and the Dudh Koshi Valley before finishing back at Lukla.

How Difficult Is This Trek?

Everest Base Camp is a challenging high-altitude trek. The route does not normally require technical climbing skills, but it involves repeated long walking days, steep ascents and descents, cold conditions and significant elevation gain.

The greatest challenge for many trekkers is not the terrain itself but the sustained altitude. Good cardiovascular fitness, leg strength and experience with long hiking days are useful preparation.

Altitude & Acclimatization

The Everest Base Camp itinerary reaches elevations above 5,000 m at Base Camp and Kala Patthar. The reduced oxygen available at these elevations makes acclimatization an essential part of the trek.

The acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar and Pheriche provide additional time for the body to adapt before the route reaches its highest points.
